Aperçu du projet

Grue nucleon recently completed the export and installation of a 10-ton european electric wire rope hoist for a logistics operator in Italy. The hoist was integrated into the customer's overhead crane runway to support daily pallet and general cargo handling. This case study walks through the product specification, factory testing, export packaging, and on-site installation — completed earlier this year.

Customer Background & Requirement

The customer, a logistics operator based in northern Italy, was running multi-shift pallet and general cargo handling in a warehouse originally equipped with a lower-capacity hoist that no longer matched their throughput. As order volumes grew, the existing unit was cycling more frequently than its duty rating allowed, leading to more frequent brake and gearbox servicing and unplanned downtime during peak shifts.

The customer's technical team specified a replacement unit capable of a 9 m lifting height to clear their racking layout, compatible with their existing I-beam monorail runway (to avoid a costly runway rebuild), and rated for M5 (FEM 2m) duty class — one step above general-purpose M3/M4 hoists — to match their actual cycle frequency rather than just their rated tonnage.

Why 10-Ton, M5 Duty — Not Just Matching the Old Nameplate

A common mistake in hoist replacement projects is specifying the new unit at the same rated tonnage as the old one, without re-checking the actual load spectrum and cycle count. In this case, Nucleon's engineering team reviewed the customer's shift pattern and typical load weights before confirming the specification:

  • Duty class over tonnage: at the customer's cycle frequency, an M3/M4-rated hoist — even at the same 10-ton capacity — would have shortened brake and wire rope service life; M5 (FEM 2m) was selected to match real usage, not just peak load
  • Runway compatibility: the trolley wheel gauge and flange width were matched to the existing I-beam profile, avoiding the need to replace or reinforce the runway beam
  • Headroom: the 9 m lifting height was confirmed against the warehouse's racking height and roof clearance before the unit was built, to avoid an on-site rework after delivery

This selection logic — matching duty class and structural compatibility to actual site conditions, not just the tonnage on the old nameplate — is the same approach covered in more detail in our guide to crane gearbox and duty class selection.

Factory Testing & Quality Control

Before shipment, the hoist underwent load testing at rated capacity, brake testing, and insulation testing to confirm compliance with EN 14492-2 — the European standard governing the design, testing, and maintenance of power-driven hoists — before packing.

Export Packaging & Delivery

To ensure the hoist arrived in Italy without transit damage, the unit was packed in a reinforced plywood export crate with moisture-proof film and cushioning at all contact points. The shipment was transported by sea freight from China to Italy, with the full delivery process — from factory dispatch to site arrival — completed within a few weeks.

On-Site Installation & Commissioning

Once on site, the hoist was lifted into position using slings and a hook, then mounted onto the warehouse's I-beam runway. This was followed by alignment checks, load testing, and control system commissioning before handover to the customer.

Why This Hoist Meets Italian Site Requirements

Unlike hoists built only to domestic Chinese specifications, this unit was configured to EN 14492-2 for the European market and 400V/50Hz for Italian site power, so no additional electrical rework or safety re-certification was needed after installation.

Results

Since commissioning, the hoist has been running the customer's daily multi-shift lifting cycles at its rated M5 duty class, with no downtime attributable to the equipment reported to date. Matching the duty class to actual cycle frequency — rather than tonnage alone — is expected to extend brake and wire rope service intervals compared with the previous unit, reducing the frequency of unplanned maintenance stops during peak operation. Nucleon will continue to monitor performance through its standard after-sales follow-up.

FAQ

What lifting capacity is suitable for a logistics warehouse hoist?

Capacity should be based on the heaviest single load plus a safety margin, not just average pallet weight — for most general logistics warehouses, 5–10 ton electric hoists cover the majority of handling needs.

How is an electric hoist installed on an existing warehouse crane runway?

The hoist trolley is matched to the runway beam's flange width and rail profile, then lifted into position and secured before electrical and control system commissioning.

Do hoists exported to Europe need different specifications than domestic Chinese units?

Yes — units for the EU market should be configured for 230V/400V, 50Hz supply per EN 60038 and tested to EN 14492-2, rather than China's domestic 380V standard.

How long does it take to export an electric hoist from China to Italy?

Sea freight delivery typically takes several weeks from factory dispatch to arrival at the Italian port, plus on-site installation time.

Can a new hoist be installed on an existing crane runway without rebuilding it?

In most cases yes, provided the new hoist's trolley wheel gauge and flange width are matched to the existing runway beam profile during specification — this is confirmed before manufacturing to avoid on-site rework.
