Nucleon Crane supplied 6 floor mounted slewing jib cranes to a machining company in Romania. The cranes stand beside the CNC machine tools and handle workpieces, fixtures and materials at each station. This case covers the project, the crane configuration, why a jib crane suits a machining workshop, how it compares with other lifting options, and how the equipment was packed for export.

Why a Machining Workshop Uses Floor Mounted Jib Cranes

A machining workshop has several machine tools, and each one needs its own loading and unloading. An overhead crane covers the whole bay, but it is usually shared, so operators wait for it. A floor mounted slewing jib crane gives each machine its own lifting point.

  • One crane per work area. Operators lift workpieces, chucks, vices and fixtures without waiting for a shared crane.
  • No building structure needed. The crane stands on its own foundation, so no runway beams or roof support are required.
  • Easy load positioning. The jib turns around the column, and the electric hoist gives controlled lifting and lowering.
  • Flexible layout. Each crane stands next to its machine, with the swing range planned around machine doors and operator areas.

Crane Configuration

Each crane has a vertical steel column fixed to a concrete foundation with anchor bolts. A horizontal jib arm rotates around the column, and the electric hoist travels along the arm. The design is modular, so the jib length and form can be customized to the layout.

  • Column: the main supporting structure, made of high-quality steel, with a flared base plate.
  • Jib arm (cantilever): connected to the column, with yellow-black safety stripes at the arm end.
  • Slewing mechanism: rotates the jib 360° around the column.
  • آلية الرفع electric hoist with electric trolley travel along the jib.
  • النظام الكهربائي: pendant pushbutton control, with remote control available.
  • Finish: high-visibility yellow coating.

Technical Specifications

The cranes in this project follow the Nucleon floor mounted slewing jib crane series, which covers 0.5 to 10 t with a beam length and lifting height of 2 to 6 m.

Jib Crane vs Other Lifting Options in a Machining Workshop

Optionالسعة النموذجيةالأفضل لـLimitation
Floor mounted slewing jib crane0.5 – 10 tDedicated lifting at one machine or stationCovers a circular area around the column; needs its own foundation
Wall mounted cantilever jib crane0.5 – 1 tWorkshops with strong walls or columns, no floor foundationLight loads only; the wall or column must carry the load
Mobile portable jib crane0.5 – 2 tOccasional lifting at different positionsLow lifting height (1–3 m)
رافعة ذراع مفصلية80 – 600 kgLight loads that need precise positioningSmall capacity
رافعة علوية ذات عارضة واحدة1 – 32 tCovering a whole bay and moving loads between areasNeeds runway structure and is shared between stations

For this customer, the workshop layout called for a lifting point at every machine, so a floor mounted jib crane at each station was the more direct solution.

Capacity, Radius and Foundation: Why 3 t at 5 m Is Not Just a Bigger 1 t

Capacity cannot be judged without radius. The load on the column base and foundation depends on both. As a simple comparison (ignoring the weight of the jib and hoist):

وحدةLoad × RadiusApproximate Bending Moment at the Base
1 t at 4 m1 t × 4 mabout 4 t·m
3 t at 5 m3 t × 5 mabout 15 t·m

The 3 t unit puts nearly four times the bending moment on its column and foundation, even though its capacity is only three times higher. This is why Nucleon asks for the load و the radius at the quotation stage, and why the foundation for each crane is designed for its own capacity and radius rather than copied from one crane to the next.

Installation at the Romanian Workshop

The cranes were installed next to the customer’s CNC machines. Before installation, the foundation for each crane was prepared to the layout Nucleon provided, covering the concrete slab and the anchor bolt positions. The swing range of each jib was checked against machine doors, walkways and neighbouring cranes so the arms do not interfere with each other. Nucleon provides installation guidance for customers overseas.

Export Packing and Shipment

The photos show how the cranes were prepared for export at the Nucleon factory:

  1. Component protection. Columns and jib arms were wrapped in plastic film against moisture and scratches during sea transport.
  2. Wooden crate packing. The wrapped components were packed in custom-length plywood crates with timber bases and internal supports, sized to the length of the columns and jib arms.
  3. Controlled lifting. The crates were lifted with chains and webbing slings to avoid shock and protect the contents.
  4. Truck loading. The crates were loaded onto flatbed trucks for transport from the factory to the port.

Each crate was labelled for identification at the port and on arrival.

Daily Checks and Maintenance

Jib cranes are simple machines, but regular checks keep them safe:

  • Check the hook, hook latch and chain or wire rope before each shift.
  • Check that the pendant buttons and the emergency stop work.
  • Check that the jib turns smoothly and that the slewing bearing is lubricated as the manual specifies.
  • Check the anchor bolts for looseness and the column base for cracks.
  • Keep records of periodic inspections as required by local regulations.

Spare parts for the hoist, pendant and electrical components can be supplied through Nucleon’s spare parts service.

Nucleon Comment

“For a machining workshop, the jib crane has to fit the machine layout, not the other way around. We confirmed the load, radius and swing range for each station before production, so every crane matched its machine.”
— Nucleon Crane, Overseas Business Division

How to Choose a Jib Crane for a Machining Workshop

  1. Weigh the full load. Include the workpiece, fixture, clamps and lifting accessories.
  2. Choose radius together with capacity. The same capacity at a longer radius puts much more load on the column and foundation.
  3. Check the lifting height. The hook must clear the machine table and the tallest workpiece.
  4. Consider how often you lift. Frequent lifting at each machine needs a hoist selected for that duty, not just the tonnage. See electric chain hoists و electric wire rope hoists.
  5. Plan the layout. Check each crane’s swing range against machines, walkways and neighbouring cranes.
  6. Confirm local power and documents. Voltage, frequency and the documents your country requires should be agreed before production.

التعليمات

What is a floor mounted slewing jib crane?
A free standing crane with a vertical column fixed to a floor foundation and a rotating horizontal arm that carries an electric hoist. It is also called a column jib crane.

What capacity and size does Nucleon offer?
The floor mounted slewing jib crane series covers 0.5 to 10 t, with a beam length of 2 to 6 m and a lifting height of 2 to 6 m. Larger or special requirements can be discussed with our engineers.

Does it need a building structure to support it?
No. It stands on its own foundation and does not rely on the workshop’s roof or columns.

Can the voltage be customized for Europe?
Yes. The standard power supply is 380 V / 50 Hz / 3-phase, and other standards such as 400 V can be supplied.

Does Nucleon help with installation overseas?
Yes. Nucleon provides installation guidance, and customized design to fit the workshop layout.

Should I choose a jib crane or an overhead crane?
Choose a jib crane when each machine or station needs its own lifting point. Choose an overhead crane when loads must move across the whole bay.

Planning Jib Cranes for Your Workshop?

Send us your workpiece weight, required radius, lifting height, workshop layout and local voltage. Our engineers will recommend a configuration and provide a foundation drawing and quotation.
